Weatherproofing your Home for Winter

Snow has fallen in New Jersey and it’s time to get your home ready for winter! Here are a few quick tips for how to make your home just a little cozier!

  • Buy a programmable thermostat
Programmable thermostats can adjust temps while folks are away from home, saving families hundreds of dollars throughout the year.
  • Fix leaks around doors and windows
Use weather stripping or old fashioned caulking to seal up gaps in and around windows and doors.
  • Add attic or basement insulation
A lot of heat is lost through uninsulated spaces! Insulating them may be pricey, but doing so provides a large return on investment
  • Use a water heater insulating blanket
Insulating your hot water heater can reduce heat lost through the sides of the water heater by up to 40%!
  • Use door draft stoppers
You can buy a door draft stopper or, if you’re looking for a winter craft, make one yourself! By placing them by exterior doors, you can keep away cold air and enjoy a lower heating bill.
